Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS) Compassion for Seniors Program, an HMS-created program, was initiated on April 1, 2022. Andrea Montoya, HMS’ Chief Support Officer, says, “this program aims to support our community of older adults living on limited incomes whose lives are improved through basic needs services.” The Compassion for Seniors program was started to provide basic needs support to seniors 60 years of age or older. The program’s priority is to address urgent needs such as household repairs, rent, mortgage, utilities, and other miscellaneous expenses – each of which will be considered upon the availability of funds. This program is funded through community donations and 2021 legislative funding allocations.
According to Dan Otero, HMS’ CEO, “the program has assisted many seniors to date, thus accomplishing its purpose; however, there is a much greater need to be met with appropriate financial support and community awareness.” HMS is supporting our community of older adults living on limited incomes whose lives are improved with assistance. To date, HMS has assisted 14 seniors with urgent needs. Each of these seniors had limited income and needed assistance with paying utility bills, purchasing and installing a new water heater for a homebound senior, hotel accommodations during medical-related travel, or fuel reimbursements to out-of-town physician visits. If you are or know of a senior in need or are interested in supporting this critically important program through a tax-deductible donation to assist seniors in need, please contact our HMS Senior Advocate at (575)597-2967 for more information.
